Quick Summary

If you're not interested in reading all the down and dirty details of this cleanse, how the shakes, smoothies, and soups tasted, and my experience with Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit, this is the bottom line.

The 5-Day Cleanse Kit contains 7 packets of mini-meals for each of the five days all you do is add water to the mixes. You'll receive a Super Chocolate Smoothie (or Vanilla), Bone Broth, Super Berry Smoothie, Lemon Chicken Soup, and three packets of Lemon Sips. The smoothies, shakes, bone broth, and soup mixes tasted delicious and are made from high quality, whole-food ingredients.

I experienced a little hunger on the cleanse, particularly on day 1, but the hunger was manageable. Some days I forgot about eating altogether.

I lost 7 pounds in 5 days and, two weeks later, have not gained any of the weight back. Not only did I lose weight, but I lost my cravings for junk food, and gained the confidence and desire to continue my healthy eating and wellness journey. Not only did I get the benefits of the cleanse (weight loss) but also it was a reset in that it gave me motivation.

I was at the very end of a stressful bathroom renovation and totally forgot to take photos of the big pink Cleanse Kit box full of 5 individual daily boxes.

What is Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit?

Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day cleanse is a program to help you lose weight, reset your taste buds, (add more) and remove toxins from your body.

The 5-Day Cleanse Kit is EVERYTHING you need to do this cleanse, all the shakes, smoothies, bone broth, and soups, in one box.

Rather than spending time shopping for ingredients, pulling out the blender to make smoothies, chopping veggies and fruits, measuring ingredients, and cooking homemade soups, all you do is add water to the Cleanse Kit packets.

Each daily box contains your entire day’s food. Just add water!

What exactly is in the 5-Day Cleanse Kit?

You'll receive a large pink box that contains 5 individual boxes, one for each day of the cleanse. Each individual box has all of your food for the day, just like in the photo above. All you have to do is add hot or cold water.

Each of the 5 daily boxes contains:

  • 3 Lemon Sips

  • Super Chocolate Smoothie (or Vanilla, if you prefer)

  • Bone Broth

  • Super Berry Smoothie

  • Lemon Chicken Soup

Lemon Sips (and why it’s important)

I love to start out my day with lemon water (lemon has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties) but usually that involves me slicing and juicing a lemon. (I love my lemon juicer LINK). The Lemon Sips is an easy way to get the benefits of lemon water with basically zero effort.

Lemon Sips help to rehydrate your body and flush out toxins. The Lemon Sips also contain a melon concentrate called Dimpless™. This all-natural extract has been clinically shown to smooth away cellulite by shrinking fat cells hiding just below the skin.

Lemon Sip Ingredients: lemon powder, stevia leaf extract, melon juice concentrate.

Super Chocolate Smoothie (and why it’s important)

The Super Chocolate (or Vanilla) Smoothie is your breakfast each day. It’s loaded with protein, collagen, greens, and berries to nourish your body and give you energy for the day. What I love about the Chocolate Smoothie is that it is made from REAL whole food ingredients, not a bunch of chemical concoctions.

Super Chocolate Smoothie Ingredients: Dr. Kellyann Protein Complex [Whey Protein Isolate(WPI), Collagen Peptide], Prebiotic complex [Inulin, Konjac root, Xylooligosaccharides], Cocoa powder, Natural flavors, Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), Xanthan gum, Flaxseed, Sea salt, Beetroot, Spirulina, Monk fruit extract, Chia seed, Stevia leaf extract, Steviol glycoside, Watercress herb, Collard, Cabbage, Spinach, Lactase, Broccoli, Alfalfa, Blueberry, Celery, Dandelion, Kale, Kelp

Bone Broth (and why it’s important)

Next, you'll sip on a savory mug of low-calorie Bone Broth. It’s packed with protein and nutrients to nourish your body, support gut health, rejuvenate skin cells, and satisfy hunger cravings.

Bone Broth Ingredients: Chicken bone broth powder, Natural flavors, Grass-fed bovine hydrolyzed collagen, Salt, Cauliflower powder, Minced green onion, Reishi mushroom powder, Turmeric extract

Super Berry Smoothie (and why it’s important)

Next up on your cleanse is a Super Berry Smoothie. It’s rich in antioxidants and fat-burning superfoods to help your body fight free radicals, boost energy, and keep aging at bay.

Super Berry Smoothie Ingredients: Grass-fed bovine hydrolyzed collagen, Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), Prebiotic fiber (from konjac root), Natural berries flavor, Citric acid, Lemon, Organic Strawberry, Cherry, Apple, Blueberry, Orange, Cranberry, Stevia leaf extract, Blackberry, Raspberry, Grape, Peach, Black currant, Monk fruit extract, Black chokeberry, Plum, Apricot, Pomegranate extract, Elderberry

Lemon Chicken Soup (and why it’s important)

The Lemon Chicken Soup is the cornerstone of this cleanse and detox program. It is packed with collagen, MCT oil, herbs, spices, and even pieces of veggies. It will fill you up and leave you satisfied so you will sleep well and wake up ready for another day of the detox. The Lemon Chicken Soup is made from non-GMO ingredients and is soy-, lactose- and gluten-free.

Lemon Chicken Soup Ingredients: Medium chain triglycerides (MCT), Hydrolyzed collagen, Chicken broth, Chicken fat, Cauliflower, Natural flavors, Garlic, Onion, Konjac root, Turmeric, Salt, Olive oil, Acacia gum, Tomato, Collard greens, Minced green onion, Carrot, Celery, Celery fragments, Citric acid, Green onion fragments, Green bell pepper, Kale fragments, Spinach fragments, Tomato fragments, Apple cider vinegar, Black pepper, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary extract, Thyme

This is the Super Berry Smoothie. It’s pretty pink color conveniently matches my fresh flowers.

How do the smoothies, shakes, and soups REALLY taste?

There is no way I will drink smoothies and shakes, or sip soups for five straight days if I don't like the taste. I suspect you may feel the same. So here is my opinion on the taste of the drinks in Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit.

Lemon Sips

I quite enjoyed the Lemon Sips. To me, it tastes like lemonade. It's not super tart because it is sweetened with a little bit of stevia leaf.

Super Chocolate Smoothie

The chocolate smoothie tastes really good. I am not a huge fan of protein or health shakes because they often have that characteristic protein powder taste or an earthy, “healthy” taste. Because the Super Chocolate Smoothie uses flavorless collagen, to me it tastes like chocolate milk.

You won’t confuse it with a McDonald’s chocolate shake but it’s very tasty which is shocking to me considering the number of healthy ingredients it has!

Bone Broth

If you've never tried bone broth before, it may be an acquired taste. It is a little blander than chicken or beef stock, which is actually good because you can salt to taste and add other herbs or spices. It also is a little thicker than the stock or broth you may use in cooking.

I have had a lot of bone broth in my day. I've made my own chicken, beef, and pork broth, I've tried expensive and store brand liquid bone broth, and I've purchased bone broth powders. Homemade always tastes the best, in my opinion. Lots of bone of bone broths on the market taste gross, especially the powdered varieties.

To me, Dr. Kellyann's bone broth is the best tasting purchased bone broth. I don't get a weird metallic taste as I do with many brands. To me it tastes like a rich, hearty chicken stock. The broth included in this 5-Day Cleanse Kit also has collagen and other superfood ingredients like mushrooms, reishi mushroom powder, and turmeric. I just add a bit of pink Himalayan salt because I feel it needs a bit of salt.

Super Berry Smoothie

I was a little hesitant to try this smoothie because the only thing worse than a bad protein shake is a protein drink with artificial fruit flavor. Or anything with artificial fruit flavor, like Froot Loops cereal. I brought out the blender for this smoothie and mixed it with a handful of ice.

The Super Berry smoothie is surprisingly good. I taste mostly strawberry taste and it's sweet, not too tart. I noticed a little bit of an aftertaste, but it's not off-putting.

Lemon Chicken Soup

The Lemon Chicken Soup is a creamy, thick, chicken soup with a hint of lemon. It reminds me of the Greek classic Avgolemono soup. This was my favorite "meal" on the 5-Day Cleanse and I looked forward to it every night.

Rather than sipping the soup from a mug, as I did with the bone broth, I poured the soup into a bowl to make it feel more like an actual meal.  One thing I noticed is that the soup (to me) has a rather odd smell which I can't really describe. As I said, it tastes delicious and it was nice to have a hot, satisfying "dinner."

Will I be starving while doing the detox?

I am someone who has an irrational fear of hunger. I pack enough snacks for the entire airplane when I travel. Even though I know a few hunger pangs won't kill me, I do have a little fear around it.

I do know in my brain I will not actually starve, because not only have I done this cleanse in the past, but I intermittent fast almost every day and do feel a healthy amount of hunger when I eat my first meal around 11:30 am or noon. But still, I have a little fear of hunger.

I did experience some hunger while using the Cleanse Kit, but it was never scary or unmanageable.

Interestingly, my most intense hunger pangs were on Day 1 and also during the hours of 3 pm to 5 pm. Those are the times on normal days I might go hunting through the refrigerator for a pre-dinner snack so I suspect the hunger was not just from lack of food but also because eating during that time is a habit.

I've written a day-by-day diary of my experience below which goes into a bit more detail about how I experienced hunger, but it was the most intense on day 1 and I never felt ravenously hungry.

Dr. Kellyann's bone broth

Bone broth is a big part of this Cleanse and Reset. It really helps curb hunger and the instant packet makes it convenient to sip at my desk.

How much cooking do I have to do?

The best part about the 5-Day Cleanse Kit is you do  ZERO cooking! Just add water to the packets and voila, dinner is served.

When I did Dr. Kellyann's cleanse in the past I always made my own shakes, smoothies, bone broth, and soups according to the recipes in her book. Purchasing the kit saved me TONS of time.

And if I'm being honest, when I'm doing a cleanse and feeling a little hungry, the last thing I want to do is spend time in the kitchen.

Does it really work, i.e., how much weight will I lose?

The 5-Day Cleanse kit definitely works.  You will lose weight, feel lighter, refreshed, and ready to resume your healthy eating journey.

I lost 7 pounds in 5 days which is the most weight I have lost on Dr. Kellyann's cleanses so far.  I am not a person who ever has spectacular weight loss results so I was really shocked and thrilled to lose so much weight. It felt almost effortless.

Having done Dr. Kellyann's cleanse in the past (by following Dr. Kellyann's book and shopping for ingredients, and making all the soups, smoothies, and shakes myself) I never lost more than 5 pounds in 5 days.

But just don't take my word for it. Here is what some other people who have used Dr. Kellyann's Cleanse Kit have to say about their results:

LK says: “I was blown away how simple the 5 day plan was to complete. Was hungry perhaps one day out of the 5, however was ecstatic to see the scale dropping each morning. This kicked off my new way of life for me and I started incorporating the healthy lifestyle changes into my family’s everyday also!”

Customer from San Diego says: “This is the best cleanse I've ever done. No hunger at all and everything tastes amazing! Weight loss is fast, too.”

Heidi B says: “This cleanse was fairly easy to complete (I say fairly because it’s never fun cleansing while the rest of the family is whooping it up with pizza). I felt great and so energetic upon completion that I’m planning on doing it again every so often! Also my skin was noticeably glowing.”

Julie O says: “I have done two juice cleanses and a soup cleanse in the past. I was always hungry and shortly went back to some not great eating habits. With this cleanse, and eating lightly for the next few days, I was NEVER hungry--well maybe by middle of day 4 I felt a little twinge of hunger. I lost 6 pounds and felt so much better. In addition, after the cleanse my body kept "kept cleansing" for three more days. It is easy. My husband (same experience but he lost 12 pounds). We were lucky as could order one vanilla and on chocolate and shared. Lots of easy and good information as well.”

Dr. Kellyann's Lemon Chicken Soup

I looked forward to the Lemon Chicken Soup every night. It is thick, creamy, and filling.

What are the benefits of the Cleanse Kit other than weight loss?

Many people do Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit for weight loss and that is certainly a big benefit. Especially during this time of the pandemic and lockdowns and stress, many of us turn to food to soothe us and cope with the stresses of life.

The Cleanse Kit is an easy way to take off a few pounds.

Here are other benefits of the Cleanse Kit besides just weight loss:

Dr. Kellyann's 5 Day Cleanse Kit may help you to look and feel younger.

The Cleanse & Reset Kit is loaded with hundreds of the highest quality vitamins, minerals, nutrients plus a variety of proteins to supersaturate your body with intense nutrition. All those nutrients may have you looking and feeling great.

The Cleanse Kit is rich in protein-packed collagen which helps tighten and condition your skin and diminish lines and wrinkles.

You know those Lemon Sips you get to enjoy 3 times per day on the cleanse? A new ingredient has been added to the lemonade-like drink called Dimpless™. It is an all-natural melon extract that has been clinically shown to smooth away cellulite by shrinking fat cells hiding just below the skin.

The cleanse kit may improve your gut health.

The Cleanse Kit gives your digestive system a rest and a chance to repair the damage done by toxins. It may reduce bloating and gas. You’ll also get the antioxidants and amino acids your body needs to repair an overworked gut, prevent heartburn, and nourish your gut lining to help with issues like leaky gut syndrome.

I suffer with heartburn so much so that I take Nexium every other day to keep the awful burning sensation at bay. While on the cleanse the heartburn was much less noticeable.

The cleanse kit will help improve whole-body health.

The health benefits of saturating yourself with the essential vitamins and nutrients in the cleanse help you to feel full and satisfied.  Your system will flush out unhealthy toxins, you’ll feel more energetic during the day, and your body will be nourished with lean muscle-building protein.

The cleanse kit is good for your hair and nails.

With a blend of antioxidants, minerals, and collagen, my protein-rich cleanse will coat your cells with the nutrients your body is craving. You’ll find your nails turning stronger and smoother, follicles becoming more nourished, and hair growing thicker, stronger, and more radiant.

Dr. Kellyann's Lemon Sips Drink

You can have 3 Lemon Sips every day. It tastes like lemonade and gives you energy while keeping you hydrated.

The 5-day cleanse kit will give you the confidence you need to get back on track.

Other than the weight loss, this was the biggest benefit for me. As I mentioned, I am irrationally afraid of hunger. Doing the cleanse without feeling like I was starving gives me the confidence to avoid constant snacking or grazing.

You will also find you crave healthy food. After feeling so light and healthy for five days, the last thing I wanted to do was order a pizza or grab a sugary Starbucks white chocolate mocha. I craved fruits and veggies. I wanted to eat good quality proteins and healthy fats like avocado. After this cleanse I felt extremely motivated and inspired to continue my wellness journey.

The cleanse:

  • reminded me I can do hard things

  • reminded me that occasional hunger pangs are not scary

  • taught me I eat for many reasons other than true physical hunger

  • reset my mind and body to desire healthy, nutritious foods

Dr. Kellyann's Super Chocolate Smoothie

Sometimes I used the blender and other times I simply used a shaker bottle to mix up the Super Chocolate Smoothie.

How much does the 5-Day Cleanse Kit cost and is it worth the money?

Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit costs $219. That's a lot of money and the price was one of the reasons I have only done her cleanse by purchasing my own groceries and making my own soups, shakes, and smoothies in the past.

However, the Cleanse Kit saved me a ton of time.

If you've ever made homemade bone broth (this is the recipe I use LINK) you know it is an easy process, but also very time-consuming.

It also takes time to write out a complete shopping list and to grocery shop or order groceries online.

You'll spend hours measuring and chopping fruits and veggies, opening cans of coconut milk, purchasing herbs and spices to use in your bone broth, shakes, and soups.

The time I saved not dragging out my heavy blender, measuring ingredients for smoothies, and washing the blender twice a day was reason enough to embrace a cute little packet I could throw in my shaker cup and blend for a meal instead.

The Cleanse Kit is not much more expensive than purchasing your own ingredients.

I was really curious how the $219 cost of the Cleanse Kit compared to purchasing my own ingredients and doing the cleanse the old-fashioned way. So I created a spreadsheet and listed all the ingredients I have purchased in the past for the 5-day cleanse, not including my personal pantry staples like pink Himalayan salt, stevia, and basic herbs and spices.

Using prices at Hy-Vee, my local grocery store, I would have spent $164.11 for Dr. Kellyann's book plus ingredients to make homemade bone broth, and all of the soups, smoothies, and shakes, needed for the five days of detoxing. It would have cost another $35 had I needed pantry items I keep on hand, but others may not, like salt, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, stevia or monkfruit sweetener, etc.

I was actually shocked when I realized how expensive it is (especially now with rampant inflation) to buy basic healthy foods like fruit, coconut milk, olive oil, vegetables and greens.

Will the weight come back on?

One question I always have when doing a mini diet, detox or cleanse is "will the weight come right back on?"

It's a fair question.

I finished this 5-Day Cleanse Kit and lost 7 pounds. Two weeks later I have not gained any of the weight I lost.  In fact, I've lost 3 more pounds since then.

This is just my experience but likely you will keep the weight off also.

If you do the cleanse and immediately gorge on McDonald's, donuts, and Snyder’s Sourdough Pretzel Nuggets (my personal nemesis) then yes, you can expect to gain weight.

But if you eat minimally processed meals and focus on good quality proteins, low-starch fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats like coconut, avocado, and extra-virgin olive oil, then you likely will not put the weight back on.  Like me, you can expect to continue to lose weight.

While cleansing I planned meals for the days AFTER the cleanse. I chose recipes from Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet book and Michael Symon’s Fix it with Food cookbook.

My day-by-day experience doing Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit

If you've read this far likely you are seriously interested in trying this Cleanse Kit. I want to share my experience of how each day went to give you a little idea of what to expect.

Before I started the cleanse.

Once my kit arrived I decided on my start date which was right after New Year. Not only was it after the dreaded "holiday season" but I had also had a Christmas beach vacation with family, including my chef son.  Needless to say, my healthy eating resolution crumbled and lots of culinary celebrating and debauchery ensued!

I made sure the cleanse week was a low-key week without any celebrations or craziness going on.

I also planned out approximate times for each of the drinks, based on my daily schedule. This way I wasn't left wondering what to eat when. It looked like this:

  • 8am Lemon Sip #1

  • 10am Super Chocolate Smoothie

  • 12pm Bone Broth

  • 2pm Super Berry Smoothie

  • 3pm Lemon Sip #2

  • 5pm Lemon Chicken Soup

  • 7pm Lemon Sip #3

Day 1

On day 1 I was excited to start and weighed myself first thing in the morning. I had my first Lemon Sip at 8:15 am, followed by coffee.

You CAN drink coffee on the cleanse provided you don't use sugary sweeteners or creamers. I used stevia and full-fat coconut milk in my coffee. Because the cleanse is so different from my normal way of eating, I wanted to do everything I could to keep the day "normal." And that means coffee.

By 10:30 am I was feeling very empty and my tummy was growling. This is pretty typical because I usually skip breakfast and have my first meal between 11 am and noon.

At 11 am I had the Super Chocolate Smoothie. I mixed it in a blender bottle because I had a busy day and didn't want to deal with the blender.

At 1 pm I had the bone broth. I was also peeing my brains out which means I was hydrated. Yay!

2:30 pm was the Super Berry Smoothie. This time I made it in the blender with a little crushed ice.

By dinner, 6 pm, I was ready for the Lemon Chicken Soup. I had a slight headache and felt very empty and hungry. I was getting a little cranky and left the kitchen while my husband cooked and ate his dinner.

At 7 pm I had a Lemon Sip.

I finished the day short one Lemon Sip. I had a slight headache and was a bit foggy-headed from afternoon into the evening. This is a typical symptom of dramatically dropping your carb level and is called the carb flu.

The hunger was definitely noticeable but not intolerable. I had the desire to eat real food but remembered my commitment to myself and occupied myself with watching TV, journaling, and crocheting.

Day 2

I woke up on day 2 feeling light and not abnormally hungry. I didn't feel the brain fog like I did the previous night.

  • 8 am Lemon Sip

  • 9 am coffee

  • 11:40 chocolate shake. I didn't feel any hungrier than I normally do at this time of day, unlike on Day 1.  I  also had plenty of energy and did a little yard work outside, cleaned my newly-renovated bathroom, and shopped for some decor. Because I was running around I got off track with my food schedule but didn't really notice any extra hunger.

  • 2:30 pm bone broth

  • 5:30 pm berry smoothie

  • 8:45 pm lemon chicken soup

I felt great all day. The only time I got really hungry was around 4:45 but I was busy and not able to have my shake until 5:30. This was the day our bathroom renovation ended, so I spent the evening moving all our stuff back into the bathroom and didn't have my soup until late. I also missed a Lemon Sip.  I had zero brain fog and plenty of energy. I felt super proud having completed day 2.

Day 3

I woke up feeling good and recommitted to sticking closer to the eating schedule I made before starting the cleanse. I didn't plan any strenuous workouts during this time but did take a walk outside to enjoy the sun.

Just like on day 2, I got caught up in things and delayed some of the meals. It was surprising to me because I can think of almost no times when I've "forgotten" to eat.  By the time I had my chocolate shake "breakfast" at 1 pm I was very hungry and had some brain fog.

The brain fog continued throughout the day. Unlike day 2 when I felt energized, I was a little tired and lethargic on day 3.

  • 9:30 am Lemon Sip

  • 10 am coffee

  • 1 pm chocolate shake

  • 3:15 pm bone broth

  • 4:30 pm berry shake

  • 6 pm Lemon Sip

  • 7 pm Lemon Chicken Soup

Day 4

I felt good when I woke up and wasn’t overly hungry.  I was thirsty which is surprising considering how much liquid I've been drinking.  I didn't do a formal workout and instead went for a walk. I felt energetic and clear-headed today. I had a little bit of stomach upset in the afternoon which apparently is totally normal for a cleanse, as your body is getting rid of toxins.

In the evening I was tired, had a bit of a headache and some brain fog, but nothing that interfered with my life.

  • 9:00 am Lemon Sip

  • 9:45 am coffee

  • 11:15 am chocolate shake

  • 1:45 pm bone broth

  • 3:00 pm berry shake

  • 4:30 Lemon Sip

  • 6:30 pm Lemon Chicken Soup

Day 5

Not gonna lie, I was excited to arrive on day 5! What I've noticed on this cleanse is that I am able to tolerate hunger. I also don't think about food as obsessively as I normally do. Before this cleanse I would never delay lunch (or dinner).  I think of my meals as a break, not just nourishing my body.  There are lots of emotions around my meals that have nothing to do with food.

I noticed a lot less food drama on this cleanse. I could drink a shake at my desk while working. I could sip on lemon water while watching TV or reading a book without a big snack. What this tells me is that many times I eat for reasons other than true hunger.

  • 9 am Lemon Sip

  • 9:45 am Coffee

  • 1:30 pm chocolate shake

  • 2 pm bone broth

  • 2:45 pm berry shake

  • 4 pm Lemon Sip

  • 5:30 pm Lemon Chicken Soup

  • 7 pm Lemon Sip - my last!!

Day 6

I woke up 7 pounds lighter and with newly gained confidence that I can deal with hunger without constant snacking, and the desire to get back on track with my healthy eating plan.

cream of wild mushroom soup

This was my first real meal after doing the 5-Day Cleanse Kit. It’s Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup from Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet book.

I hope you've found this review of Dr. Kellyann's 5-Day Cleanse Kit helpful and that I've answered all your questions. I do recommend it if you want to lose a bit of weight, fill your body with super healthy, nourishing foods, and begin (or resume) a healthy eating plan.
